Excellent Value, but not a Complete Palette
Quick Summary:Pros:- Smooth buttery consistency- Colors blend well. No mud.- Quality pigments. Toxic pigments are avoided.- Great value for money (at < $50 for the Portrait Palette).Cons:- Portrait Palette is not complete by itself, you can't go off and start painting portraits with this set alone (e.g. there are no blues). Minimally you also need the Essential Palette.- No way (yet) to buy individual tubes (other than a set of whites). When you run out of one color the only options are to buy another full set or get some other brand of paint.- I don't know why, but at the time of this writing Amazon Canada remains sold out of them (other than 3rd party sellers with astronomical prices), though ZenArt continues to sell these palettes on their own website and they are sold on Amazon USA.In DetailSo far I'm still exploring these paints. And frankly, so far there's nothing that I dislike about them. The pigments are what you'd expect quality paints to have, e.g. Yellow Ochre is made with PY42 and Burnt Umber is PBr7, which is what these colors are traditionally made with. There are no "hues" (which quickly turn to mud if you try blend colors together). Their literature says that single pigments were used wherever possible. A few of them are a combination of two pigments, which makes me slightly nervous, but so far I've experienced no issues because of it.A few comments on individual colors:I'm burning through white at a prodigious rate, anticipating running out fairly quickly. I've purchased a large tube of Winton titanium white (I'd probably have gone with the ZenArt whites, but at this time all the ZenArt paint prices are sky high in Canada). If you're going to buy this Portrait Palette (along with the Essential Palette of course) you'll probably also want to pick up the extra box of whites. The Napthol Red in this set has an enormously high tinting strength, it takes only a tiny bit to tint something pink or red. This one tube is probably a lifetime supply for me. They have rated the lightfastness of this paint at "II ASTM" (= very good), but the PR8 pigment it's made from is rated at "III ASTM" (= acceptable) in the pigments database. Something to be aware of.A few reviewers made comment that they saw a bit of oil-pigment separation and a few of their tubes leaked a bit of oil from under the cap. Mine too, but let's not get bent out of shape over it, it's not hard to clean up. All oil paints will separate, unless it has additives and extenders in it. So do you want paint without fillers or do you want paint that won't separate? The marketing literature stresses that these are professional artist quality paints with high pigment loads. I've not seen anything that explicitly qualifies that claim (I've seen no statement that says their paint contains no fillers, for example), but we'll tentatively accept that at face value. Nothing I've experienced with these paints so far contradicts those claims.Bottom Line:These paints seem to be high quality, to the extent of my ability to judge paint. They are very well priced. The one year money back guarantee might induce you to give them a try. Make sure you've got some blue kicking around and enough white though.
