An Introduction to Heritage Breeds: Saving and Raising Rare-Breed Livestock and Poultry

First off let me say I lLOVE this books info on what heritage breeds are and the snapshots of the individual breeds. I am a member of the livestock conservancy and I truly believe in protecting our farm animal genetic variety and heritage... however ... I was confused by the placement of the breed snapshots. They were interspersed throughout the book and didn't include much information. I really wanted to look up info on each breed being watched by the conservancy--but was disappointed a list of breeds wasn't included. If they added a breed profile for each animal under watch and grouped all the profiles together with an index that would truly make this book AMAZING.

I was hoping that this book was actually list each breed and give a description in some detail. They do have a list in the back but it does not have a picture of the breed nor does it have actual Detailed information about their characteristics. It is a good book and I definitely support heritage breeds.

This is a wonderful book written by people who are passionate about saving heritage breed livestock. It covers detailed plans on effective breeding strategies, breed descriptions, rescue, and getting in touch with heritage breeders. Written like a textbook, the information presented inside is geared more towards the professional as opposed to the person who is looking for a pet or few animals for personal use, but the book is clear, concise, and well thought out .

As someone interested in starting a farm with heritage breeds, I was really hoping for more. The book is not well organized as a reference book, as the color descriptions are mixed throughout the book instead of presented glossary or index style. Hard to consult for a quick answer or study up on any one thing easily. Guidance and organization from The Livestock Conservancy would be extremely helpful, as the individual associations make the situation very murky as you investigate some breeds and online resources are limited and/or dated.

Robust guide to all breeds. More than you'll ever probably need to know, but very helpful in selecting a new breed.

Was expecting actual photos, not hand drawn pictures. Shame as would of been a good book other than that

Fantastic book, a real insight into rare and native breeds

It contained less specific breed/species profiles than I expected to see, but I purchased the book hoping to find information on conservation genetics and how to avoid inbreeding depression from a small population base, as well as closed population management, and found exactly what I needed.And as a side bonus, all those methods apply equally well for my fish tank projects to!
