Veterinary Treatments & Medications for Horsemen

The most thorough, practical, and useful vet reference available for the knowledgeable horse owner
Excellent book, now my go-to veterinary reference. Yes it was written in the late 70's but it's amazing how consistent the advice is with modern practice... in fact several times I've come across information the horse world was all abuzz about in the last few years as "new" revelations! The vets who wrote this book really knew their stuff! This book is written for non-vetrinarians (but is very suited to veterinarians too), but unlike other horse owner "vet" books this one actually explains how to do most treatments up to and including minor surgeries. Now obviously I don't think most horse owners should try doing sutures or surgery on their horses, but for the experienced and knowledgeable professional equestrian who earns a living off horses and can't afford to have the vet out for every scratch or bump, or for the horseman who doesn't have any equine vets in their area, this book can be a lifesaver (literally). I've got a ton of lay-person "veterinary references" and they always just recommend calling the vet, even for simple treatments most knowledgeable horse owners already do by themselves anyways. Now, as a professional myself I have on hand most typical veterinary drugs or can get them from my vet, that's important to many treatments in the book. It's a thick book but not huge, but it manages to cover an amazing variety of topics in surprising depth. Unlike the other reviewer who says most of this information is online, there's some jewels in here which I couldn't find online. What's more since this was written before many of the fancier (and EXPENSIVE) equipment was available to equine vets, often times their treatment recommendations are effective and yet might cost $7 in materials and be less invasive, versus $1600 at a vet hospital/University - not to insinuate vet hospitals and universities don't have their place or that a horse in mortal danger shouldn't be taken to the nearest one immediately. All in all this is my new favorite reference. The language is understandable without making the assumption the reader has an elementary school vocabulary and understanding of horse biology. It may over the heads of those new to horses or for whom horses are a hobby, but I think it's the most thorough, practical, and useful veterinary reference I've ever come across, and after having it only a couple weeks now I've referenced it probably every day.

A veterinary masterpiece
Considering the original publication date, this book has retained much of its relevance and important for me in the 40 years since It first impressed me. Thanks to cross referencing and use of the index, It’s held its own and on occasion even surpassed the assessment skills of academic and clinical diagnosticians.Having said that, I’ve long wondered why a revised and updated edition couldn’t be made available sometime in this horseman’s lifetime. In short, this manual has been my single greatest resource for four decades and a contributing factor to the long and healthy lives of my horses.

This was recommended to me by an equine enthusiast
This was recommended to me by an equine enthusiast. I haven't referenced it as much as I thought I would. I mostly use the internet for information, but it looks nice on the shelf.
